We Will Create a Sustainable Future

16 stycznia 2023

Since its inception, PKO Bank Polski has made an active and creative contribution to the development of our customers and the environment in which they operate. For over 100 years of its history, the bank has influenced processes that make a significant impact and shape the reality of Poland. Our role remains the same after the peak of the pandemic and in the midst of the war waged by Russia that is changing the global order and value chains. The Davos Forum is a very special place to talk about this. As the largest bank in Poland, PKO Bank Polski has an important role to play.

O ne of the biggest challenges for humanity these days is how to strike a balance between the investments and costs of increasingly dynamic economic development on the one hand and the interests of societies and our planet on the other. Their condition should not only be a measure of our success but also the goal of our endeavours. All those who influence the economy, including financial institutions such as PKO Bank Polski, have a particular responsibility in this regard. We understand this and are ready to share our invaluable experience, expertise and, above all, resources with all market stakeholders in order to influence the changing reality through planned concerted effort.

We recognise these challenges in our newly adopted strategy for 2023-2025. ESG is a key factor that will shape our business. Globally, we are facing a civilisational shift dictated by a growing awareness of how destructive the unreflective impact of the economy on the environment can be and how it needs to be countered. Leveraging our experience and using tools built on innovative technologies, we care about a better future and we are working to make it a reality.

The strength of PKO Bank Polski is its in-depth knowledge of the Polish economy and our customers. Our group has unique competences based on knowledge and systemic data analysis. We are at the forefront of new technologies and process robotisation using AI-based solutions. Working hand in hand with businesses, our teams of analysts implement products and provide tools to improve the flow of knowledge and capital to the economy.

Especially now, in an era of crises and advanced regulatory changes at a national and EU level, we are well positioned to support our clients in maintaining competitive advantages. We are committed to financing strategic investments for Poland, contributing to a safe and sustainable transformation of the entire Polish economy. In our strategy for 2023-2025, we aspire to be the unchallenged leader of transition financing in Poland with an active impact on our region. We will achieve this goal through a unique combination of support in technological expertise and financial products for all our customer segments.

Our main focus is on smart data-driven investment in new technologies as a precondition for maintaining and developing competitive advantages. The PKO Bank Polski Group will soon launch a number of initiatives to establish Climate Tech Financing, a ground-breaking venture in the Polish financial industry. The integrated product offering centred on our customers’ needs and challenges will facilitate their access to financing. It will also help them use available public financing, which imposes environmental requirements on beneficiaries. Together with our customers, the institutional environment and other financial market participants, we want to develop a safe and sustainable transition path for Poland.

This must be matched with the profile of the Polish economy, which will continue to build welfare and protect optimal conditions for investment in Poland. The same approach must be taken with respect to agriculture.

Poland is a major producer and exporter of agricultural commodities and food. It ranks fifth in terms of the value of agricultural production in the European Union. Poland is the EU’s seventh largest food exporter. Poland has retained the competitive advantages necessary to increase food production and exports. As a result of increased gross fixed capital formation over the past several years, the landscape of the domestic agri-food sector has improved considerably. However, notwithstanding significant changes, the sector requires more investment in modern technologies, not only to spur further growth in productivity but also to mitigate risks arising, among others, from climate change.

Just like other branches of the Polish economy, agriculture faces the challenge of developing in a process of environmentally- and socially-friendly transition. This mainly includes better efficiency by automating processes while meeting increasingly stringent legal requirements. Equally important is the increasing awareness of consumers, impacting their ESG preferences. Given these conditions, for many months now, PKO Bank Polski has been working to create an offer which meets the needs of farmers and will make it available soon.
