A Musical Welcome for UN Digital Summit Guests in Katowice

5 grudnia 2021

Representatives of governments, scientific institutions, technology companies and social organisations from six continents will meet on 6-10 December in Katowice for the UN-IGF 2021 Digital Summit.

Before tackling an agenda featuring the most important challenges posed by the internet, participants will listen to a concert of beautiful Polish classical and film music, and sung poetry. The concert will be broadcast live by Polish Television. The organiser of the event is the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and NASK.

The “Wings of the Mind” concert will present global hits from film music, including Wojciech Kilar from the film “Dracula”, JAP Kaczmarek from the film “Dreamer” and Krzysztof Komeda from the film “Rosemary’s Baby”, as well as a handful of less well-known, but equally beautiful works, e.g. “Prząśniczka” by Stanisław Moniuszko and musical arrangements of poems by Polish Nobel laureates Wisława Szymborska and Czesław Miłosz. We will also hear classical masterpieces by Frederic Chopin, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Krzysztof Penderecki – all within a unique concert hall in the building of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

“Music is a universal medium. For centuries, this language has connected people from different lands and cultures. The internet works in a similar way. We want the participants of the Digital Summit, attending the event from the most distant corners of the world, to remember that we are meeting to build a future for a global network that is friendly, safe, open and shared by all global citizens,” says NASK Director Wojciech Pawlak.

The Digital Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Summit is a UN initiative aimed at developing regulations and mechanisms favouring the sustainable development of the internet. It aims to counteract digital exclusion and promote the use of technology to support the aspirations of all people around the world. Among the challenges we face today are computer crime, global and regional disinformation campaigns (fake news and conspiracy theories) and limiting the dominance of large digital corporations, while striving for maximum economic freedom, freedom of speech and data availability.

International IGF Summits are held in various countries once a year. The previous edition was held in Berlin. The summit in Katowice was scheduled for 2020, but postponed due to the pandemic. Next year’s host will be Ethiopia, followed (in 2023) by Japan.

The concert, planned to open the five-day event, will take place in Katowice in the concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra on 6 December 2021 at 9 p.m. In addition to the orchestra, the performers will include, among others, Stanisław Soyka, Natalia Kukulska, Richard Bona, Piotr Cugowski, Cliff Martinez and Sebastian Karpiel-Bułecka and Zakopower.

The “Wings of the Mind” concert will be organised by the NASK National Research Institute, the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and Polish Television. The strategic partners of the concert are Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, PZU and the City of Katowice.

The concert will be broadcast live on TVP1.
